5 - Zack and Miri Make a Porno - Tropic Thunder had some pretty good chuckles, and Robert Downey Jr. turned in an Oscar worthy performance in the film, however, overall the film wasn't quite funny enough to squeak onto this list, and was edged out by Kevin Smith's latest comedy, Zack and Miri Make a Porno. Seth Rogen, in a rare appearance in a non-Judd Apatow vehicle, stars alongside the gorgeous Elizabeth Banks and when their utilities are turned off in the middle of winter they decide that making their own porno movie will help them overcome their money problems. The supporting cast includes Kevin Smith's buddy Jason Mewes is his usual amusing self, and Craig Robinson (aka Darryl from The Office) provides plenty of laughs of his own. Robinson's comedic timing is impeccable, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him land a leading comedic role in the near future. Zack and Miri keeps the laughs coming throughout, and Kevin Smith adds his usual dose of gross-out humor. If you aren't easily offended and don't mind some nudity you should really check out this comedy. One of the funniest movies of the year. 4 - Step Brothers - Though Will Ferrell is not quite the comedic heavyweight he once was, he proved with Step Brothers that he is still one of the funniest men in Hollywood. Ferrell plays alongside John C. Reilly for the umpteenth time, and the two show that their comedic chemistry is still going strong. Step Brothers might not elicit much deep thought from the audience, but rare is the comedy that does. It does what it was intended to though, in that it makes us laugh. Step Brothers is an easy choice for one of the top 5 funniest movies of 2008. 3 - Forgetting Sarah Marshall - This hilarious film has kind of been forgotten about since it was released in April of this year, but I couldn't help but include it on this list of the funniest movies of 2008. Freaks and Geeks alum Jason Segel wrote and starred in the film, and is laugh out loud funny in his first turn as a leading man. He gets caught up in a bizarre love triangle with the stunning Kirsten Bell and the equally beautiful Mila Kunis. That won't sound like much of a conundrum to most single guys out there, but Segel's life is made incredibly complicated because of it. This movie has laughs from beginning to end, and is the sleeper comedy of the year. 2 - Kung Fu Panda - It is kind of strange to see an animated film made primarily for children in the middle of a list of gross-out and sexually charged comedy films. However, with the always hilarious Jack Black voicing the role of Po, the movie immediately deserves consideration as a comedy in addition to a film for kids. Jack Black is joined by a plethora of Hollywood heavyweights like Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan and Seth Rogen. Ian McShane, who was so incredible as Al Swearengen in the HBO series Deadwood lends his powerful voice to Tai Lung, the film's villain. If you have neglected to see this, dismissing it as a silly kid's movie, then you need to run, not walk, and pick up a copy now. Truly one of the funniest films of the year. 1 - Pineapple Express - With Judd Apatow's protégés peppered liberally throughout this list of the top 5 funniest movies of 2008, it seemed only fitting that the current king of comedy himself nab the number one spot. Pineapple Express is the third movie produced by Judd Apatow on this list (along with Step Brothers and Forgetting Sarah Marshall) and as funny as his other films are, this one was just a bit better. Seth Rogen was one of the busiest actors in Hollywood in 2008, and he co-stars along with another Freaks and Geeks alum, James Franco. Franco's performance is spot-on as a stoner/drug-dealer who becomes mixed up with Rogen's character after selling him some rare pot code-named Pineapple Express. The pair exhibits near perfect comedic chemistry and they are ably supported by Craig Robinson, Danny McBride and Gary Cole. The ending was a little over the top, but the dialog is so funny that I was willing to suspend my disbelief, and didn't stop laughing until the end credits rolled.
